Essay on The Government Stimulus - 1697 Words
In these current economic times, people have lost jobs. People have lost faith in the economy since the worth of their money keeps falling. Businesses are failing left and right because of the lack of confidence in the system. Banks have folded because of the amount of people who are unable to pay their loans, leaving the banks without funds. The auto industry is failing as people cannot afford the new cars being produced by Detroit. Confidence in the economic system of the United States is very low. How can the country recover from this economic recession? Some economists would say that the government should step in to save the day by pumping funds into the system. Question: Discuss about the Ottawa Charter Action Areas. Answer: Ottawa Charter Action Areas Diabetes is increasingly becoming a health risk among young people in Australia. Ottawa Charter has described five actions to assist in reducing the risk. The first action involves developing an individual skill set. For example, a person may attend awareness meetings that educate them on the appropriate diet to take (Maximova, Hanusaik, Kishchuk, Paradis, OLoughlin, 2016). The second action involves strengthening a community through health walks to various health centers to visit the sick and also educate other members about the dangers. The third action involves the reorientation of the health facilities through upgrade their systems to help detect this disease at an earlier stage. The fourth action is creating a supportive environment through donations from organizations to help facilities increase their medicine supply (Thompson, Watson, Tilford, 2017). Lastly, it is also essential to build health policies such as the introduction of physical activities in schools to ensure tha t students keep their bodies fit. These actions have a link among individuals, community, and the government. Each group requires the participation of the other to achieve the ultimate health goal. Corporate Finance for Introduction to Accounting- myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theCorporate Finance for Short Introduction to Accounting. Answer: Introduction A cash-generating unit is the smallest identifiable group of assets capable of generating cash inflows that are, to a large extent, independent of cash flows derived from other assets or groups of assets. Impairment is important and therefore,An organization should evaluate if there are indications that any asset or, if applicable, any cash-generating unit may be impaired, in which case, it must estimate its recoverable amounts by making any applicable corrections (Hitchner, Hyden and Mard, 2013). intangible assets are irreplaceable as a source of cash flow generation for a number of entities around the world. The presentation and disclosure of information of this item constitutes a challenge for the accounting systems and for the profession in general.International regulatory agencies have expressed the need to achieve a high degree of standardization in accounting practices, the subject of intangible accounting is at the apex of the pyramid in issues of importance and topicality (H itchner, Hyden and Mard, 2013).This paper presents a summary of the basic criteria for accounting for intangible assets by several accounting standard setting bodies in the world. The term "purchased goodwill" and "intangible asset" is sometimes referred to as synonymous, but the differences between the two are deep; the definition of acquired goodwill evidences it:Goodwill is the future economic benefits from assets that have not been individually identifiable and recognized separately."The calculation of the useful life can be determined by reference to the time or units of production. Assets with an indefinite useful life are not amortized. The entity shall disclose all relevant information according to the "usefulness paradigm for decision making". It seeks the adequate information to the users framed within groups of interest, as is deduced from the pretension of the New International Financial Architecture. Impairment loss In case the company must recognize an impairment loss of a cash-generating unit to which all or part of a goodwill has been allotted, it will first reduce the book value of the goodwill corresponding to that unit. If the impairment exceeds the amount of the latter, secondly, it will reduce in proportion to its book value the other assets of the cash-generating unit, up to the limit of the greater of the following: its fair value less costs to sell and its value in use (Rajasekaran and Lalitha, 2011). Assets with definite or indefinite useful lives The 5th standard of valuation of the General Accounting Plan, related to intangible assets, establishes that for the subsequent valuation of the same it must be assessed whether the useful life of the intangible fixed assets is defined or indefinite. Problem of impairment of goodwill :We know that a fixed asset with a definite useful life will be amortized in a systematic and rational way, taking into account its life and residual value. On the other hand, an asset with an indefinite useful life will not be amortized, although its possible deterioration should be analyzed, whenever there is evidence of it, at least annually (Anil Kumar, Kumar and Mariyappa, 2010). How this affects the Goodwill The Goodwill may only be included in the asset when its value is evidenced by an onerous acquisition, in the context of a business combination. Goodwill will not be amortized. Instead, the cash-generating units to which the goodwill has been allocated shall be subject at least annually to the impairment test, where appropriate to the recording of the impairment charge. The impairment losses recognized in the goodwill will not be reversed in subsequent periods. How we interpret this When we acquire a business in progress, we assume both its assets and its liabilities. The difference between one and the other would be the net value of the business but, nevertheless, we must pay a higher price for it, this would be the Goodwill. The goodwill, therefore, appears as an intangible asset in a business combination and will remain there, without being amortized, until we are aware of its possible deterioration (Sellhorn, 2004). If over time we estimate the impairment, at the end of the year we must do the following: First, we must calculate the value of the cash generating unit where the fund is recognized. That is, we assume that the business in progress had a series of assets and liabilities that, over time, will have changed (debts that have been paid, clients that we have already collected, items of property that are being amortized, etc.) (Hitchner, Hyden and Mard, 2013).Second, We compare it with the current value of the cash flows that we estimate will generate this cash-generating unit. If, in fact, we understand that there is a impairment, we take it as a valuation correction of the Goodwill; taking into account that, since it is not reversible, we must pay it in the Fund's own account. In the event that the company must recognize an impairment loss of a cash-generating unit to which all or part of a goodwill has been allotted, it will first reduce the book value of the goodwill corresponding to that unit. If the deterioration exceeds the amount of this second, it will reduce in proportion to its book value the remaining assets of the unit generating cash. Therefore, we first account for the deterioration of the Goodwill, paying in its own account, since it is not reversible (Barker, 2011). The historical value of these assets must correspond to the amount of clearly identifiable expenditures in which they are actually incurred or must be incurred in order to acquire, form or use them. , which, when applicable, should be re-expressed as a consequence of inflation. Acceptable methods for amortizing them are straight-line items, production units and others of recognized technical value, which are adequate according to the nature of the corresponding asset. Also in this case must choose the one that best complies with the basic standard of association (Weil, 2017). Conclusion Impairment losses consist of asset value adjustments (current assets, property, plant and equipment, intangible assets, financial instruments) that correspond to impairment losses reversible. "An impairment loss on the value of an item of property, plant and equipment when its book value exceeds its recoverable amount, this being understood as the greater of its fair value less costs to sell and its value in use. The recognition of this loss generates an expense in the profit and loss account, as well as its reversion, an income (Thomas and Ward, 2015). It should be taken into account that the reversal of the impairment shall be limited to the book value of the property, which would be recognized at the date of reversal if the impairment had not been recorded. Banks use all types of advertisement such as n ewspaper, radio, television, magazines and hoardings. Also, sales promotion device such as Point of Purchase material, brochures and advertisement specialties like ball pens, calendars, diaries, etc. Publicity is a major strength as a promotion tool than advertising as customers tend to believe a news item rather than an advertisement. Word of promotion is yet another important promotion tool as it is a better persuader and convincer than advertising and personal selling, as banking services are narrated by customer themselves. Besides, as Social welfare and Corporate Social Responsibility are considered to be an important part of banking services, the publicity measures need due care. PEOPLE: Banking products cannot be separated from the person (banker) who markets them. The product and the seller together constitute the banking product. The corporate mission should be communicated repeatedly and effectively to all employees by the top management. The placement policy should emphasize that the recruits should not only be conversant with all aspects of banking businesses but also have the skill for social interaction and tolerance for interpersonal contact. Human resource can be developed through education, training and by psychological tests. Even incentives can inject efficiency and can motivate people for productive and qualitative work. PROCESS: It involves all activities right from the product conception stage, to product designing and development down to its marketing at the branch level. Flow of activities: all the major activities of banks follow RBI guidelines. There has to be adherence to certain rules and principles in the banking operations. The activities have been segregated into various departments accordingly. a) Standardization: banks have got standardized procedures got typical transactions. In fact not only all the branches of a single- bank, but all the banks have some standardization in them. This is because of the rules they are subject to. Besides this, each of the banks has its standard forms, documentations etc. Standardization saves a lot of time behind individual transaction. b) Customization: There are specialty counters at each branch to deal with customers of a particular scheme. Besides this the customers can select their deposit period among the available alternatives. Number of stores: numbers of the steps are usually specified and a specific pattern is followed to minimize time taken. Simplicity: in banks various functions are segregated. Separate counters exist with clear indication. Thus a customer wanting to deposit money goes to deposits counter and does not mingle elsewhere. This makes procedures not only simple but consume less time. Besides instruction boards in national boards in national and regional language help the customers further. Customer involvement: ATM does not involve any bank employees. Besides, during usual bank transactions, there is definite customer involvement at some or the other place because of the money matters and signature requires. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE: The physical evidences include signage, reports, punch lines, other tangibles, employees dress code etc. The companys financial reports are issued to the customers to emphasis or credibility. Even some of the banks follow a dress code for their internal customers. This helps the customers to feel the ease and comfort. Signage: each and every bank has its logo by which a person can identify the company. Thus such signages are significant for creating visualization and corporate identity . Tangibles: banks give pens, writing pads to the internal customers. Even the passbooks, chequebooks, etc reduce the inherent Intangibility of services.

How to Write a Resume that Beats the Computers
How to Write a Resume that Beats the Computers Your Resume:à Humans vs. Computers When I give webinars on writing resumes, one of the topics I cover is how to make your resume visually appealing.à I often get this question: Why would I want to spend so much time and money making my resume pretty if itââ¬â¢s just going to confuse the computers? My answer is that yes, the computers are important, and that you ALSO need to have a resume thatââ¬â¢s designed to be read by human beings.à We all know that you are most likely to find your job through networking or the ââ¬Å"hidden job market.â⬠When you send materials to someone in your network or to a decision-maker in the hidden job market, you want to include a professional-looking resume.à And when itââ¬â¢s time for an interview, itââ¬â¢s also advisable to have a nicely formatted resume to hand across the table. For those of you who are hoping to get those interviews by applying online, the question still remains: How can I write a resume that makes it past the computers?à In other words:à How can I raise my odds above 2%? Keep reading. There are two issues with submitting online resumes.à One is the format of the resume; the second is the keywords it contains. Formatting for Robots: ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software is not the smartest software in the world.à It gets confused by bullets, non-traditional headings, graphs, tables, and text boxes.à So you need to have a version of your resume that is stripped down and organized just for the computers. We call this your ââ¬Å"text-basedâ⬠resume. Your text-based resume should follow these guidelines: Create it in (or copy it into) a text editor such as Notepad, SimpleText or TextEdit. Use easily understandable headings like ââ¬Å"Summary of Qualifications,â⬠ââ¬Å"Professional Experienceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Education.â⬠Donââ¬â¢t get fancy or creative with your headings, and donââ¬â¢t put two categories together in one section.à Do NOT, for instance, use the heading ââ¬Å"Education Certificationsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Skills Interests.â⬠Use dashes or asterisks instead of bullets. List your address in standard ââ¬Å"tombstoneâ⬠style, one line on top of the next. Put spaces between sections. Hereââ¬â¢s what your text-based resume might look like (beautiful, isnt it?): How will you know what keywords to use in your resume? Just because the computers can read your resume doesnââ¬â¢t mean you will have the right keywords to make it past their screening systems. Perhaps counter-intuitively, the keywords that truly make a difference with computer scanners are the ones you have on your resume that not everyone else includes. I have no doubt that you have great experience that qualifies you for many positions. If the computer can understand and rank it properly, it will help you immensely.

Vibration Training Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words
Vibration Training - Coursework Example These efforts led to the development of vibration platforms and whole body vibration technology as a solution (History of Whole Body Vibration). Vibration training is a technology and not a device. The device employed is the vibration platform. In whole body vibration training vibration platforms are used and the individual stands, sits, or lies prone on the vibration platform, depending on how and for what are the objectives in the use of the technology. The frequency and the strength of the vibrations can be adjusted for achieving different ends. The individual holds the required position on the vibrating platform, which may be in the standing on one foot or squatting with knees fully bent and so on for a selected period of time, like sixty seconds. Vibration training is thus a simple means for achieving certain desired health parameters in individuals (Whole body vibration training). Evidence from studies of individuals exposed to vibration effects show that there are a host of possible beneficial as well as destructive effects. Summarizing these effects is that every biological system and subsystem of the human body can possibly be affected by vibration input, as is seen from chronic exposure to vibrations at the wrokplace. Given that gravity works in the verticular direction, exercising in the verticular direction causes verticular expansion and contraction of all the major organs in human body, the abdominal cavity and the muscles in the body. These movements can provide the beneficial effect of stimulating growth plates, improving blood circulation, activating the lymph system, eliminating cellulite and enhancing muscle strength. This is the basis for the posit that controlled exposure to vibrations could have beneficial impacts (Mester et al, 1999). The medical use of vibration training is derived from the possibility of vibration training being beneficial in strengthening muscles, enhancing bone

Library Research Paper - Essay Example Instead of individual phonemes being connected to form the rudimentary parts of an out-loud language, sign language uses individual movements to create meaning. Nevertheless, the language itself is not merely a tool used by a particular community to express and communicate thoughts, emotions, and ideas to other people. A living object connects members of the deaf community across ethnographic boundaries, a range of diverse backgrounds, and a number of very different hearing loss disorders. In a rare look into the culture of deafness from a complex sociocultural perspective, anthropologists Richard J. Senghas and Leila Monaghan (2002) raised questions about community identity, language ideology, and cultural formation/maintenance, in an effort to learn about the kind of culture that deafness has produced within the last century. The researchers correctly identify deafness not merely as the absence of hearing, but as a community of many speakers with many different languages and cultur al practices. On a superficial level, the language of the deaf community reflects the nature of that community as one comprised of people who are inherently incapable of using the spoken word. Nevertheless, on a more fundamental level, the language of the deaf community reflects deafness as a matter of social construction, and that understanding the deaf language is instrumental to understanding the deaf community. Linguistic communities are collections of people who can and do communicate with one another using language. Deaf people, or members of the deaf community, participate in these linguistic communities through a fully-formed language that bears the hallmarks of all natural languages, as identified in Stokoeââ¬â¢s (1980) and Washabaughââ¬â¢s (1981) surveys. The participation in a linguistic community means that the anthropological, sociological, and linguistic study of the deaf

The theory of wound care fro Podiatry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
The theory of wound care fro Podiatry - Essay Example They may be chronic or acute, and open or closed. The patient presented with a full thickness ulcer measuring 8 mms in diameter of approximately 6 months duration and the tissues around the ulcer are acutely inflamed. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis may develop leg and foot ulcers of varied aetiologies, including venous disease, infection and inflammation. The foot ulcers in rheumatoid arthritis patients may involve several of these aetiological factors and are often difficult to heal (Sunita). Both the ulcers and the treatments are often painful, and these ulcers may be present for years. Chronic wounds plague more than 10 million people in the world today. But even more troubling is the fact that these wounds may persist for months and even years without any healing or sign of improvement (Morgan 25). The problem is usually, if not always, not the wound itself; and therefore treating the wound will not, in chronic cases, resolve the issue. Chronic wounds have underlying causes t hat must be addressed in order for the wound to heal properly. Because normal skin and wound care is not enough to heal these wounds they usually remain for extended periods of time. As a rule, only 50% of leg ulcers heal within 4 months of appearing, 20% remain open at 2 years and 8% remain open at 5 years (World Wide Wounds). So we see that to effectively treat a chronic wound you must treat the cause and not simply treat the symptom. There are several factors that affect wound healing. These include the age of the patient, hydration status, presence of infection, presence of underlying conditions, medications, obesity, oxygenation and tissue perfusion, personal hygiene and nutrition (Bowler 499). In the case of Mrs. Freeman, these factors can be very well correlated. The physiological changes that occur with ageing place older patients at higher risk of poor wound healing. The age of the patient places her in a relative state of immune deficiency. The immune system also declines with age making older patients more susceptible to infection. Older people can also present with other chronic diseases, which affect their circulation and oxygenation to the wound bed. Dehydration leads to an electrolyte imbalance and impaired cellular function. The presence of infection can significantly alter the rate of wound healing. Infection has been defined as the deposition and multiplication of organisms in tissue with an associ ated host reaction (Dealy 56). In the given case, infection is rather evident in the patient's ulcer. The presence of unhealthy granulation, thick, bloody, and malodorous exudates indicate the presence of infection. Wound infection is a problem because, at the most fundamental level, infection stops a wound from healing by prolonging the inflammatory phase, disrupting the normal clotting mechanisms and promoting disordered leukocyte function and ultimately preventing the development of new blood vessels and formation of granulation tissue. Chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus can delay the process of healing. The patient has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis of 10 years duration and this has markedly affected wound healing in her case. She also has secondary hypertension and iron deficiency anemia. The presence of chronic diseases weakens the immune system, dampening its ability to counteract the pathogens attacking the

Dangerous Goods Can Create Accidents Engineering Essay
Dangerous Goods Can Create Accidents Engineering Essay Dangerous goods are essentially for wide range of global industry, commercial, medical and research requirement and processes. This is because of the advantages of air transport, a great deal of this kind of dangerous cargo is carried by air transport called airplane. Besides that, in term of definition dangerous goods (DG) is something about hazard material or can be easily said any risk object which can causes mischief such as explosive, corrosive, flammable, toxic and even radioactive. Nevertheless, ICAO has been recognized the importance of this type of cargo and has been taken steps to ensure that such of cargo can be carried safely. Furthermore, dangerous goods posses lots of significant risks and impacts. For example like it can start a fire and help in spreading a fire. Then, it can react with aircraft material, can release toxic vapor and even come o worst explosion might happen. http://www.ritchiestraining.co.uk/pix/uploaded/Library/Ritchies_Dangerous_Goods_By_Air_and_Sea.jpg Figure 1: Dangerous Goods Can Create Accidents Page 1 https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifuPfeTzE7VEn5JNTxCSrQNqfu79h-8iC070senyFqdkSOpykAkLIMtn7zfAKO29BfZbSTYr36FiXsrzjciqvjN_-8OOecL1ZJhKFLKMJAEb3ze8mrC0TXr6z14IQrsLLPKPyGMloi4EI/s660/wentwrong+header+copy+small.jpg Figure 2: ValuJet Accident by Explosion There is an incident where can be proved that hazard material can causes harm to aircraft itself. On May 11, 1996 Everglades, Miami, Florida ValuJet, Flight 592 McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, N904VJ. The in-flight fire was caused by activation of one or more oxygen generators in the forward cargo hold. The generators were outdated, improperly labeled, lacked safety caps and were prohibited from being transported on a passenger flight. The loss of control resulted either from flight control failure or incapacitation of the crew due to extreme heat and smoke. Recently, all 110 aboard killed. The person who handles dangerous goods at airport called dangerous goods inspector. He / she must be well trained in every aspect of the duties as a technical inspector and regulatory officer otherwise the aviation will turn down. This kind of person must aware where an each shipment of dangerous goods may possibly represent an intimidation to life, health, property or environment. In addition, the inspector should obey the procedures and regulations attempt to handle cargo and minimize the danger during transport. Basically, how do the inspector handle the DG is he / she carried out at cargo facilities with the scale and nature of the operation. Besides that, inspection of procedures includes visiting operators or handling agents premises as proper. Page 2 2.0 Transport Dangerous Goods by Annex 18 Annex 18 can be specified as standard and recommended practices which enable dangerous goods to be carried safely. Annex also makes compulsory upon Contracting States the requirements of the Technical Instructions, which contain the very detailed and various instructions necessary for the correct handling of dangerous cargo. Logically speaking, the use of these common bases by all forms of transport allow cargo to be transferred safe, sound and even smooth between air, sea, rail and road modes. Nevertheless, ICAO requirements for the safe handling of dangerous goods firstly identify a limited list of those substances which are unsafe to carry in any circumstances and then show how other potentially dangerous articles or substances can be transported safely. Technique of Transport Dangerous Goods Classification 5. Procedures Emergency Respond 3. Documentation, Acceptance for Air Transport 4. Handling Stowage 2. Packaging, Marking Labeling Figure 3: Technique of Transport Dangerous Goods Page 3 Identification and Classification of DG The nine hazard classes are those determined by the United Nations Committee of Experts and are used for all modes of transport. Class 1 includes explosives of all kinds, such as sporting ammunition, fireworks and signal flares. Class 2 comprises compressed or liquefied gases which may also be toxic or flammable examples are cylinders of oxygen and refrigerated liquid nitrogen. Class 3 substances are flammable liquids including gasoline, lacquers, paint thinners, etc. Class 4 covers flammable solids, spontaneously combustible materials and materials which, when in contact with water, exit flammable gases, such as some powdered metals, cellulose type film and charcoal. Class 5 covers oxidizing material, including bromated, chlorates or nitrates and this class also covers organic peroxides which are both oxygen carriers and very combustible. Class 6 includes poisonous or toxic substances example pesticides, mercury compounds, etc comprise together with infectious substances which must sometimes be shipped for diagnostics or preventative purposes. Radioactive materials are in Class 7 which there are mainly radioactive isotopes needed for medical or research purposes but are sometimes contained in manufactured articles such as heart pacemakers or smoke detectors. Corrosive substances which may be dangerous to human tissue or which pose a hazard to the structure of an aircraft are dealt with in Class 8 for example, caustic soda, battery fluid, paint remover. Finally, Class 9 is a miscellaneous category for other materials which are potentially hazardous in air transport, such as magnetized materials which could affect the aircrafts navigational systems. http://www.ctsgb.ltd.uk/assets/generic/icons.gif Figure 4: 9 Classes of Dangerous Goods Page 4 Packaging, Marking Labeling Basically, the operator or handling agent looks at the external appearance of all the packages of dangerous goods as a safety package inspection before being transported. In addition, the items need to keep in the operators custody provided whether the goods are due to transport or have been transported. However, the inspection will check that the requirements of marking and labeling have been fully filled. Hence, type of packaging that has been used is permitted and tag along with the correct specification. For the radioactive material, the handling agent will pack the material based on the radiation level packages which fit in state for transport. Nevertheless, the packages of dangerous goods should only be opened in exceptional circumstances and with extremely caution. Once if the package opened, they need to take the potential hazard from the contents into account and handle it with fully attention. Any package opened during an inspection, it must be handed before to the consignee which means the goods must be restored in its original condition by inspector. https://images.fedex.com/images/us/services/options/ground/hazmat/PhenolSolid_Boxes.jpg Figure 5: Packaging, Marking, and Labeling Page 5 Documentation and Acceptance for Air Transport Documentation is to determine a dangerous goods shipment meets all applicable requirements. Information that contain in several documents need to transport out a detailed check because it is necessary to cross refer from one document to another. The handling agent must check the associated documents when he / she have the packages of dangerous goods in his / her premises. A document check only is made when there are no packages available. There are several inspections that required inside the documents such as Air Waybill, Shippers Declaration, Acceptance Check List, Notice to Captain and others. The intention of inspecting the Air Waybill is to ensure that they have completed correctly by using the correct classification and method of packing so that it can be established. Thus, the purpose of inspecting the Acceptance Check List is to make sure that the handling agent uses a form which allow for completion by the acceptance clerk. Nevertheless, the Notice to Captain is to determine that all the required information was given and checked. At this moment, where the form was signed by the pilot and the loading / stowage requirement met. https://images.fedex.com/images/us/services/options/ground/hazmat/OP-900_Exception.jpg Figure 6: Documentation of Dangerous Goods Page 6 2.4 Handling and Stowage Handling also can be known as loading so that it can be pronounced as loading and stowage. The inspection of loading and stowage at the cargo side is to ensure the dangerous goods are adequately secured to prevent movement. Then, the requirement of segregation distances can be maintained respectively when any radioactive material has been stowed. Besides that, any cargo aircraft that has placed dangerous goods on the main deck and only get accessible by the Technical Instruction. And also make sure of toxic or infectious substances are not in close proximity to animals and foodstuffs, it can be harmful to them and also aircraft fuselage if there are any leakages from the toxic substances. http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/plcy/images/318-gl5-1_e.gif Figure 7: Handling and Stowage Table Page 7 2.5 Procedures and Emergency Response The procedure of transport dangerous goods is a guidance tool for airport directors and crews to use when developing, evaluating, updating or training an Airport Emergency Plan. It also can be informed the emergency responders to who are not experienced with airport operations or airport emergencies. However, whenever once hazardous material spills out on the aircraft body, it can be resulted as aircraft accidents or incidents. This is because the body of aircraft will be corroded and eventually it will create a whole on it and can be cabin pressurization and even lead to the aircraft crash. Thats why precautions should be aware to avoid exposure to hazardous components for safety purposes. In this kind situation, Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) needs to clean up the aftermath emergencies involving hazardous materials such as foam and hydrocarbon. The agencies must follow the strategies and procedures which contain in the flow of hazardous materials after an emergency inside the aircraft or even at the airport. Besides that, they also need to repair the pavement of the runway if the materials damaged the runway by the spills. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz1qhHjJzbDYC19B_V82h2ub32Z5qhOwYsXcfFoFYQXT4LBvwvUdd70jcaGLfySUgEWbO_2_uxxxn537Ps9ZATuV5cmqkVTI45griW7nq2rzT4OX9J4n0T9GnC0PHmSotglANBpUU3nJ4R/s1600/emergency_response_title_page.jpg Figure 8: Emergency Responses Page 8 3.0 Class 3 Flammable Liquids In many classes of dangerous goods that have been enshrined in the aviation law procedures. There are limitation on loading dangerous goods inside the aircraft, this is because not all classes are allowed to be loaded inside the aircraft unless with special exemption or provision. So, I choose Class 3-Flammable Liquids as my point of assignment of TDG. http://www.thecompliancecenter.com/store/media/catalog/product/l/b/lbcn06us_hi.gif Figure 9: Class 3 Flammable Liquid Flammables liquids can be defined as liquids, mixtures of liquids or liquids that contained solids in solution or suspension which is given off a flash point of flammable vapor at suitable temperatures must not more than 60-65Celcius. Transportation must follow the procedure which is transport the liquids at temperatures at or above the flash point for the safety purposes. Hence, this class has specific reason for regulation which is competent of posturing severe hazards due to the volatility, combustibility and potential in causing or propagating rigorous conflagrations. Besides that, there are several common transported flammable liquids in aviation industry such as acetone, paints, alcohols, perfumes, gas oil, and etc. Page 9 Nevertheless, dangerous goods inspector has an authority to handle flammable liquids. He also has capability to inspect all customer requests that has connection with logistics of flammable liquids for example like packing, packaging, compliance, freight, forwarding and training. Meanwhile, the labeling and marking of dangerous goods, the method in which they shall be located at beneath an aircraft, the responsibilities of the crews in respect of the carriage of dangerous goods and the action to be taken in the event of emergencies arising involving dangerous goods. Otherwise, if the operator fails to follow the procedure, it can turn down the aviation world industry and make disaster and even can affect the aircraft fuselage and passengers. http://images.thenews.com.pk/updates_pics/1-24-2011_9678_l_u.jpg Figure 10: Airport Explosion by Flammable Liquid Leakage at Moscow Page 10 4.0 Conclusion As my conclusion, Transport Dangerous Goods is very important subject where we as an aviator can know about the dangerous goods as well. Dangerous goods can be known as hazard materials which can cause harm to surrounding including human and animal. As we all know that dangerous goods has nine classes provided which is Class 1-Explosives, Class 2-Gases, Class 3-Flammable Liquids, Class 4-Flammable Solids, Class 5-Oxidizing Material, Class 6-Toxics and Infectious, Class 7-Radioactive, Class 8-Corrosive, and Class 9-Miscellaneous. Furthermore, with this kind of classifications we can conclude that the goods inside container are dangerous or not. Then, I have learned about the flow of instruction in dangerous goods which is classification, packaging, documentation, handling, and emergency responses. This flow is a must to operator, if one of them is missed, the transportation will automatically cancel and aviation industry will be terminated. Religious Controversy During the Time of Karl Marx Essay -- Karl Marx
Religious Controversy During the Time of Karl Marx Religion in Europe before and during 1848, the year the Communist Manifesto was written, was full of trials and tribulations. This is not a new thing for religion, ever since the creation of religion there has been problems. Religion is the one uncertainty that has caused disputes even wars in the past and in the present. Religion is discussed briefly in the Communist Manifesto. However, There is enough content about religion to see Karl Marxââ¬â¢s views on the matter but he does not go into depth on those views. Religion around the time of the Communist Manifesto was very unstable; two events prior to this time that contributed to this instability are the Separation of Christianity into Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic, and the Protestant reformations that took place. One of the most significant turning points in the history of European religion was the separation of Christianity into western and eastern religions. The Western Church became the Roman Catholic Church while the Eastern Church became the Eastern Orthodox Church. There was no formal split, the bishops of each church recognize each other as being genuinely Christian just a little odd in their beliefs. The Great Schism shows the difference between the two religions, and they are not all theological. One difference is that Eastern Orthodox priests are allowed to be married. Only monks in the Eastern Orthodox Church must remain celibate. This differs from the Roman Catholic Church where all priest must be single and chaste. [1] A major reason for the Schism was lack of communication. The two Churches grew so far apart in their mindsets and attitudes they could no longer understand each other. Conjoined by Judith Minty is a poem about a broken relationship Essay
ââ¬Å"Conjoinedâ⬠by Judith Minty is a poem about a broken relationship. Judith Minty uses many similes, metaphors, and analogies to describe an unhappy union of two people and the inseparability of marriage. The sub title is ââ¬Å" a marriage poemâ⬠which sets the theme of the poem, but until you start reading you do not realize that it is an unhappy view towards marriage. She uses words with negative connotation such as ââ¬Å"heavyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"deformedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"accidentâ⬠to describe the relationship in a marriage. She ends the poem with ââ¬Å"We cannot escape each other. â⬠This is a depressing ending to her poem because she talks about marriage as if it is a prison. Minty uses a simile to describe marriage by writing ââ¬Å"An accident, like the two-headed calf rooted in one body, fighting to suck at its motherââ¬â¢s teatsâ⬠. She uses the calf with two heads as a symbol of the two people involved in a marriage. Both have two separate minds to think for themselves but are combined in a relationship. When she says ââ¬Å"fighting to suck at its motherââ¬â¢s teatsâ⬠she talk about how two people in a marriage fight to get their way and their opinion in against each other. This enhances the poem because it shows how she compares marriage to an accident of a two-headed calf with a simile which shows her negative view towards marriage. Judith Minty uses a metaphor when she writes, ââ¬Å"The onion in my cupboard, a monster actually two joined under one transparent skinâ⬠¦ â⬠She uses the comparison of the onion to a monster to translate that marriage can be a horrible thing. She uses the transparent skin of the onion as the bond between two people in a marriage. The metaphor enhances the poem because it is the first line of the poem and it sets the unpleasant tone immediately. Minty uses a lot of diction in her poem ââ¬Å"Conjoinedâ⬠which shows her negative view towards marriage. ââ¬Å"To sever the muscle could free one, but might kill the other. â⬠She uses this sentence to show that divorce could end their unhappy marriage and free one of them, but the other will be left heart broken and hurt. She uses words with opposite connotation like ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠ad ââ¬Å"killâ⬠to show the opposite reactions of feelings that divorce may have. In this sentence she is referring back to the analogy of Siamese twins, if the twins were cut apart one of them would be free and one would die just like the relationship Minty is talking about. The tone of ââ¬Å"Conjoinedâ⬠by Judith Minty is a troubled view on marriage. You get a general feel of unhappiness towards marriage with her analogies, similes, metaphors and diction that she uses in her poem. Usually, marriage is associated to positive words such as happy, commitment, love, and unity. In Judith Mintyââ¬â¢s poem she uses depressing words when describing marriage. She calls it a ââ¬Å"monsterâ⬠and an ââ¬Å"accident. â⬠Minty talks about the unity of two people for years as if it was a bad thing. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ doomed to live, even make love, together for sixty years. â⬠Other people would see a marriage of sixty years as a good thing and would celebrate it.

Team Charter Analysis
Team Charter Analysis Free Online Research Papers Students which collaborate as a team during a learning experience are not only going to learn about different perspectives and mindsets, but also will learn how to sharpen their skills in areas such as collaboration, commitment and conflict management, among others. One of the most critical, if not the most critical aspect of team dynamics is communication. Effective or ineffective communication can lead to a team being extremely efficient and successful, or inefficient, and a terrible failure. The purpose of team communication is to enhance team performance; therefore, it is each team memberââ¬â¢s responsibility to ensure effective communication. Group communication can sometimes be difficult. The basics of it are easy though. Everyone needs to understand the task at hand. They should all feel comfortable asking others for help and the others should be available and willing to help knowing they could later on be the one asking for assistance. Everyone should have equal responsibility and should never assume any one person to be the leader or the one responsible for it all. All deadlines should be agreed upon by all and if there is any issue about deadlines or any last minute problems they should be addressed without prejudice. Being in a group for some people can be hard. Especially when there is no possible way of communication other then the Internet. Some people believe that it is just easier to do tasks themselves because they believe it will be easier that way or in some way it will come out better without others having a hand in it. Some people say that too many hands in the pot can spoil the stew but what does that really mean? Being in a group you are required to work together, agree to disagree and get what needs to be done, done without hurting anyoneââ¬â¢s feelings, and without getting to a point where the anger affects the work, at which point does nothing for anyone in the group. There will always be some disagreements about things but everyone must understand that working in a group is not just about one person being right. A group is about everyone being heard and respected for their individual ideas. Being part of a group means meeting up sometimes for group discussion or to go over the task at hand. When working alone, that person can work on your own schedule. Some people have busier lives then others but they must understand they need to find the time to meet all deadlines. All individuals must respect that their actions or lack thereof participation can weigh heavily on everyone elseââ¬â¢s grade or ending reward. The best way to be able to work together and be a happy group would be to follow a couple guidelines. A happy group is a successful group. 1.Be willing to help out other members if needed 2.Remember there is not just one person in a group 3.Agree on all deadlines and individual assignments 4.Do not except anyone else to do your work. 5.Meet up at least once as friends and discuss nothing of the project. Get to know each other a little better first, if this is possible. This will allow everyone to be more comfortable with each other and working together will be just like working with friends. 6.If unable to meet then if possible everyone should meet in a chat area on a day and time that works for everyone. These guidelines if followed correctly will guarantee a satisfactory grade or ending reward, without anyone getting their feelings hurt and will make the teacher or even a boss very happy. Dispute Resolution Working in a group can be very challenging especially if all the team members are not at the same location. This can cause serious problems, which can result in the team missing important deadlines for task assigned. With any group there are going to be disputes among team members. The team must manage those disputes in a manner which does not jeopardize the entire project. Certain strategies must be adopted beforehand to help prevent disputes and assist in resolving the disputes which were not prevented. The following is a list of strategies which should be used to provide stronger dispute resolution management. Define expectations at onset of each project Establish contact with team via messaging, email, fax, or telephone Make adjustments as needed after consensus is reached Seek advice from facilitator as a last resort Before any particular project gets on the way a team leader should be selected or elected to help define the expectations of the individuals within the group. This individual through their leadership will help in this endeavor. Once each individual knows what is expected of them then there is no confusion going forward. This step is critical in order to succeed as a team. Communication among team members is also critical especially if all team members are located in different locations. This can be done a number of ways as defined above. Because of its speed, email or messaging might be the best option to communicating with members of the group especially in crisis situations. Should a dispute arise, communication must take place in a timely manner to resolve the dispute. With any project change is unavoidable. The team must prepare for unforeseen changes that will arise. Again, having a team leader to help manage the change is going to be important. The team should make adjustments as needed after consensus from the team is reached. Although change in most cases is certain, this doesnââ¬â¢t mean the impact will be negative. By following rules set up by the team and tweaking those rules as needed, the end result could very well be positive. Finally, as a last resort if a particular dispute cannot be resolved the facilitator should be made aware of the situation. Teams must practice being able to resolve its own disputes without the facilitator. However, when consensus cannot be reached within the group doesnââ¬â¢t hesitate to contact the facilitator so the project is not held up. In all, the team should remove personal emotions from each situation as they arise for the good of the project. When a conflict arises, all team members will discuss the problem and make a rational decision. It is the understanding that people come from various backgrounds and are not always likely to agree on certain things. However, the team must realize that in order for each of its members to succeed the team must succeed as a whole. Effective strategies for fostering good team communication include developing ground rules, conflict resolution guidelines, and clear goals. The learning team charter defines the ground rules as: Complete assignments on the agreed-upon time. Check team forum regularly. Respond to question or comments in a timely manner. Contact each other via email or phone if necessary. Having rough drafts completed in advance for revising. Ground rules are important in the success of group projects. Grounds rules define the groupââ¬â¢s expectations, agenda, schedule, and communication methods. Conflict resolution is another important aspect of fostering good team communication. The learning team charter defines the conflict resolution guidelines as: Accepting constructive criticism. Respecting everyoneââ¬â¢s opinions. Provide encouragement. Conflict resolution guidelines set the foundation for resolving conflicts within the group. Conflicts are going to arise and as a group we must know to resolve them peacefully. Establishing clear and concise goals are important in determining the groupââ¬â¢s expectations. The learning team charter defines our goals as: Open-communication. Complete work timely, efficiently, and precise. Each member will contribute to group assignments. Collaborative writing. These goals set the foundation for the groupââ¬â¢s expectations. Conflicts are going to arise within any group. To minimize these conflicts, the responsibilities and expectations are provided in the beginning within our ground rules. If problems arise, we will discuss them as soon as possible before they become big problems. To avoid conflicts we define expectations at the beginning and during assignments. To use the conflict-resolution strategy, guidelines should be established in the beginning and include: How to resolve conflicts; and what to do when conflicts arise. For example, if a team member is not completing assignments on-time. To resolve this conflict, we would search for alternatives. We would make suggestions and offer help. We would first establish the problem by asking if they had any personal issues arise. We would encourage the team member by letting them know their knowledge and perspective is valued and important in group assignments. Conflict is particularly difficult when someone feels attacked in the group. When we are criticized are natural intent is to defend ourselves by counterattacking (Locker Kienzler, 2008). For example, if a team member offers constructive criticism to another team member. If a conflict results and feelings are hurt, we would resolve this conflict by having the team members check their feelings. First, the team member will paraphrase the content of the criticââ¬â¢s message. This would ensure the team member heard the critic accurately. Second, the team member should let the critic know what his or her statement means to them (Locker Kienzler, 2008). This will ensure that the feelings of the team member and critic are recognized and heard. They can then work together to resolve their conflict. We define the importance of respecting the perspectives and opinions of our team members in our ground rules. By providing this foundation, we can communicate effectively together a s a group. Technologies to Facilitate Group Communication There are two to three technologies that one might use to facilitate group communications. One such technology is the Internet. The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standardized Internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide. The Internet is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. There are many advantages of using the Internet while working in a group, for example team members can do multiple tasks at one time, such as research while talking to each other via instant messaging. The Internet offers access to the users easily but one must also be mindful to the sources behind their information. When doing research, team members need to make sure that the information that they are getting is from credible cites. This can be a disadvantage to the group is the information that is attained is not from a reliable source and cannot be supported with valid reference. Some disadvantages to Internet commutations are that it is disorganized and conducting research often leads to non- productive searches. There are also no standards of procedures to check to make sure the information attained from certain websites is accurate. Another disadvantage would be the loss of websites or web address. A person might have technical difficulties and loose the website that they were viewing. There is also the matter of a limited archive and only current information is available online and some websites charge fees to access specialized information. There are many Instant messaging tools available for userââ¬â¢s to use which work to provide real time communication between two or more people on typed text. Instant Messaging is the hottest communication tool in the business office these days. The ability to connect with colleagues, to ask questions of team members and, of course, to chat with friends all instantaneously has pushed the telephone and even email back from the forefront of communication tools. Millions of corporate users have IM on their work machines. Google, Yahoo, MSN to name a few, are some of the major messaging service providers. Each of these companies has their own instant messaging tool which are being updated and enhanced regularly. Many business are introducing their employees to use the instant messaging tool with-in the work environment to communicate with fellow employees without leaving ones workstation. Team members can converse by typing back and forth and to upload pictures and files and the team members can download those files instantly. Instant messaging also allows the option for members to add multiple members into meeting; this allows all usersââ¬â¢ to take part in the discussion. A major setback to instant messaging is that the tool can be used for non-work related conversations. Another major problem is that the users, in most cases, install the software themselves. Information Technology leaders have no control over it. There is no supervision or any set standards or security procedures and allows virus writers and spammers to get instant access into the networks also. Another technology that team members can utilize would by the telephone. Telephones have evolved tremendously throughout the years, now we have cellular phones at our disposal. Cell phones are convenient because a person is always carrying the phone around with them on their person. Cell phones have the capability to allow the user with having access to emails, text messaging, voice mails, picture messages, and so much more. These tools are available for members to use to communicate with each other. There is also an option with cellular phone which is called three way or conference calling. This feature allows one user to bring in multiple callers into the same conversation. There are many disadvantages with cell phones because they are a cause for distraction. There are many car accidents that occur every day due to the lack of attentiveness of drivers. People get busy trying to text message or scroll through their phone books and not keeping their eyes on the road which leads to an accident. Cell phones also can cause health issue such as brain tumors due to the radiations that are transmitted. A person must be cautious because the more cell phone usage the greater the changes are for brain cancer. Conclusion In conclusion, collaborating as a team during the learning experience has it set of difficulties however; students gain knowledge and sharpen their skills in areas such as collaboration, commitment, and conflict management. One of the most critical to any team dynamics is communication. Open-communication and a willingness to accept input from others is essential during the learning experience. In addition conflict resolution strategies must be defined. These strategies help determine what to do when there is conflict. The learning team charter helps students establish team goals, ground rules, and conflict management guidelines. By defining these expectations and setting effective strategies a team can collaborate successfully as a group. References Locker, K., Kienzler, D. (2008). The Duties and Responsibilities of a PFC in the US Army Essay
The Duties and Responsibilities of a PFC in the US Army - Essay Example As a threat and analysis data gatherer there is the added pressure of insuring vital information is passed to the helicopter pilots whom have the responsibility of insuring those soldiers entrusted into their care arrive safely to the allotted destination. In the insurgent ridden, volatile, desert terrain of Afghanistan this is often a challenge that will call for the use of all the training one has received, thus far, plus some. As an Intel analysis PFC solider that is currently employed in Afghanistan it is my duty to pass along information that can ultimately inform helicopter pilots about the threats they may face while flying, through the support and operation of the ground units. I will also report on the threat and terrain analysis techniques that are best employed to spot insurgents and unsafe zones. After looking at what these two jobs entail, as well as the other duties I am often given from superiors, one will have a better understanding of the duties of a PFC in the U.S. Army. There are numerous threats the helicopter pilots face while flying the Afghani terrain. One important source of help they can rely on while on mission is the ground team support. This is where my duties become vital. After several missions many pilots become immune to the sound of artillery, it can be heard so often, and in many cases it will not be directed at them. However, the ground crewââ¬â¢s responsibility is to watch where the shots are coming from and at whom they are directed. We then pass on any vital information we have gathered to the TOC who then report it on to the pilots. Lt. Joe Harosky, second platoon commander, was in one such situation while flying a mission in Afghanistan. He reported: ââ¬Å"We had initially thought it wasnt directed at us or a company. So I just kept walking in a normal speed, thinking hey, the firing is on the other side of a mountaintop or ridge. After a few minutes ââ¬â maybe not ââ¬â maybe after a minute, five different bursts and I

Drug testing on welfare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Drug testing on welfare - Essay Example Most of the states, which passed this legislation, did so because of the belief that those who received welfare used it to get drugs (Davidson). The legislation was therefore, introduced to deny them the means of getting drugs, something that was thought to be commendable at the time. However, this assumption was found to be untrue, because of all the welfare applicants tested for drugs, only two percent of them tested positive. This automatically confirmed that this law was ineffective, due to the fact that its intended targets were found to be innocent of what they hadà beenà accused. It has now been confirmed that welfare recipients are not the majority drug users in the United States, and this makes the drug testing for welfare policy unconstitutional. The drug-testing program is an extremely expensive process for those states, which have instituted it into their welfare system. The welfare applicants are required to pay for their own tests, and if they are found to be negative, then the state has the obligation to refund them. This procedure has turned out to be extremely expensive because the majority of applicants have tested negative. The states, therefore, end up spending more than they normally would have if the program had not been put in place. Moreover, this program also has administrative costs, such as paying the staff that run it as well as for the facilities. All these costs are footed by the states, an unnecessary expense; the money would have been put in better use expanding the welfare program to cater for people who need it. These added costs to the state governments with little result have ensured ineffectiveness of this program. Theà drugà testingà forà welfareà programà wasà putà inà placeà toà ensureà theà deterrence of peopleà whoà haveà appliedà forà welfare. It was estimated that a large number of people who applied for welfare

Topic Responses Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Topic Responses - Essay Example Stem cell research entails investigations on basic cells that have the ability to create other cells. Stem cell research has always been a controversial issue, but from my perspective, I believe it will have a lot of advantages (Cohen, 2012). Stem cell research will provide a breakthrough in medicine through coming up with means of treating some of the incurable diseases present todays (Cohen, 2012). With proper advancement of this field and proper channeling of the knowledge in stem cell, management of some incurable diseases might become possible in the future when they can manage to make the stem cells regenerate newer cells (Cohen, 2012). Bacteria are unicellular living microorganisms whereas viruses are nonliving. Viruses often live in a host in order to multiply whereas bacteria can even grow on any non-living surface (Cohen, 2012). Furthermore, viruses often invade a given hostââ¬â¢s cells and then turn the given cellââ¬â¢s genetic material to make their own products (Cohen, 2012). Bacteria on the other hand carry their machineries needed for growth and multiplication with them. Viruses only carry information inform of DNA or RNA packaged in a proteins coat (Cohen, 2012). The commonest method used in identification of most bacterial species is the gram staining method (Cohen, 2012). This method is often used in identifying gram positive and gram negative bacteria on their basis of their cell wall properties. The first stain applied is the crystal violet, which then the bacteria is treated with a given mordant (Cohen, 2012). Later, the bacteria is washed by a decolorizing agent like alcohol then stained with safranin (red dye). Gram positives will be stained violet while gram negatives pink (Cohen, 2012). Acid fast staining is often used for bacteria that are not gram staining. It is mostly used for acid fast bacteria like

Manila and Jose Rizal Essay Example for Free
Manila and Jose Rizal Essay Jose Rizal is our national hero but seriously i donââ¬â¢t know a lot about him. But when I watched the film about Dr. Jose Rizal I was shocked and amazed because of his sacrifice for our country. I though the he was a brilliant individual. He served as an inspiration to all Filipino. During his lifetime, he spent many years outside the Philippines, enriching himself through education, especially in Madrid, Spain. The distance did not diminish nor reduce his love for his country. Far from his motherland, he looked across the seas to find its strength, as well as its weaknesses, in order to uplift it from the abuses of foreign rule. One of the problems and this I feel strongly, with our current approach to Rizal is that it removes him from our ability to relate. But to continue to hold that up as a reason why he should be admired is kind of ridiculous. Because of how we approach Rizal, with all these misguided attempts at humanizing him, we fail to approach him as he would have wanted: Through his ideas, his dreams, his hopes, his understanding in the Philippines, his words that inspire many Filipinos. His real words, not those carefully edited. Not the number of women he supposedly slept with. And most definitely not in the number of languages he spoke. Rizal and I shared the same belief that students must be urged by patriotic ideals and by their passionate love for their country, the Philippines, love for truth and proper values of education. Dr. Jose P. Rizal had given proof of desiring liberty for his country, and he set down as a premise, the education of the people. His teachings greatly influence in me. Like him, I believe in people power and consider myself a modern Rizal youth of today, as the hope of my motherlands tomorrow. He is very nationalistic and I want to reserve my nationalism as well. Like Rizal, Im proud to be a Filipino.

Rabbit Genetics :: essays research papers
Rabbit Genetics The similarity between the physiology of rabbits and humans makes the rabbit a good model for research into human disease. The most prevalent types of rabbits are cottontails and European rabbits. Domestic rabbits are tame assortments of European rabbits. The Californian, Florida White, and New Zealand White are the most common breeds used in research. Until 1912 rabbits were classified as rodents. Scientists discovered that the two types of animals differed in several distinct anatomical ways. Rabbits, for instance, have a second pair of upper incisors, known as "peg teeth," that are found behind the two main visible incisors in the upper jaw. Rabbits have elongated hind legs adapted for moving at high speeds over open areas. Rabbits generally move in a hopping motion. They also have webbed toes to keep them from spreading as they hop. Rabbits have flexible necks, which allow them to turn their heads more than rodents. Their spines are long and fragile and susceptible to fractures if the animal is held improperly. Research The ability to produce tumors in rabbits makes them useful models to study chemo/immunotherapy, as well as immunoprevention of certain cancers. Cholesterol studies: Rabbits have been used to test Probucol, a drug that lowers blood cholesterol and retards the development of hardening of the arteries. Eye ear and skin studies: Rabbits are used to study middle and inner ear infections, which affect millions of infants and children each year. â⬠¢ Rabbits are also used to study Entropion, a condition in which the eyelashes are turned inward, as well as Glaucoma, which often results in blindness. â⬠¢ Rabbits are used in eye and skin irritation tests to develop appropriate procedures for handling certain chemicals and to predict the toxicity of accidental exposure. â⬠¢ More than 10,000 blind or visually impaired people have benefited from corneal transplants, possible only because of hundreds of trials on rabbits. Drug metabolism: Rabbits have been used to study the effects of marijuana on the central nervous system. Pregnacy Test Presently a woman who wants to find out if she's pregnant need only make a quick trip to the local drug, grocery, or convenience store; purchase an over-the-counter home pregnancy test kit; perform a simple test; and she'll know the results within a matter of minutes. Not so long ago, however, it was not nearly as quick or easy: Awomawho thought she might be with child had to schedule an appointment with her doctor, make a trip to his office, give a urine sample, go home, then spend an anxious couple of days waiting for the office to telephone with the test results.

Inuits of Greenland: An Adaptive Society Essay -- Geography Geographic
Inuits of Greenland: An Adaptive Society In a world far different from our own in the Northern Hemisphere lies an indigenous society known as the Inuits. Specifically focusing on the Inuits of Greenland these people have adopted various risk management strategies which has enabled them to survive in a harsh arctic environment. In indigenous cultures, their well-being and sustainability is managed through control of population growth like most present day indigenous societies have been influenced by western ideas and technologies, in which some of these influences have been beneficial while other western influences have threatened their traditional way of life. The Inuits or ââ¬Å"Kalaallitâ⬠are the native people of Greenland, they have lived there for almost one thousand years. Today Greenlandââ¬â¢s population is around 55,000, 85 percent of whom are Inuit (Caulfield:1997,1). The national language is Greenlandic, which is an branch of Inupik, or Eskimo language. There are three dialects according to the region in which they are spoken, such as West Greenlandic, East Greenlandic and Polar-Eskimo. Hunting, along with fishing is fundamental to their livelihood. Today, the Inuits are highly dependent on traditional methods of obtaining food through hunting and fishing. Inuits were first introduced to Westerners in the Thirteenth century. The encounters began between the Norse colonists on Western shore and Inuit hunters. During the 17th and 18th centuries, traders returned to Europe with many artifacts from the Inuits. They also took these indigenous people as slaves, stolen from their native land to be put on display. The Inuits were viewed as heavy but happy people surviving in a rough environment. Radon Gas Case Study Essay
OBJECTIVE: Build a simple ionization chamber that is capable of detecting fairly low levels of radiation BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Radon is a cancer-causing gas. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. These radioactive materials ââ¬Å"decayâ⬠into lighter elements, emitting energetic sub-atomic particles in the process, and one of those lighter elements is Radon. Since radon is a noble gas, it is chemically inert and doesnââ¬â¢t stay bound in the solid the way itââ¬â¢s parent did. It diffuses right through solids and ends up floating freely in the air. Being a noble gas, radon is fairly harmless, itself. You breathe in some radon with every breath but then you breathe it right back out, since it isnââ¬â¢t chemically active or electrically charged. But radon has a short half-life of only about four days, meaning that about half of it will decay within four days, producing new, even lighter radioactive isotopes of other elements like polonium, lead, and bismuth. Those isotopes keep decaying, until a stable isotope of lead is reached. These radon ââ¬Å"daughtersâ⬠are not noble gasses like radon, they are usually ionized when they are produced, and they will readily stick to anything nearby, like healthy lung tissue. They typically have an even shorter half-life than radon and quickly decay inside the lung, kicking out energetic alpha and beta particles that can cause tissue damage and potentially trigger lung cancer. This unfortunate chain of events is due to the decay chain including a noble gas. Radon gas is considered to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. It can get into any type of building ââ¬â homes, offices, and schools ââ¬â and result in a high indoor radon level. But, we are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, where we spend most of our time. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Any home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. These are examples where you can find the noble gas: 1. Cracks in solid floors 2. Construction Joints 3. Cracks in walls 4. Gaps in suspended floors 5. Water supply It breaks down into solid radioactive elements called radon progeny. Radon progeny can attach to dust and other particles and can be breathed into the lungs. As radon and radon progeny in the air break down, they give off alpha particles, a form of high-energy radiation that can damage our health. Radon daughters will stick to just about anything they encounter, so they are easily collected by drawing air through a dusting cloth with an ordinary fan. After collecting the daughters for about an hour or two, the radiation being emitted from the cloth due to the further decay of the collected radioactive isotopes can be measured with a simple ionization chamber made from an empty coffee can, a single Darlington transistor, and a digital voltmeter. The deceivingly simple ion chamber is quite sensitive and can detect radon daughters in buildings with radon concentrations below the ââ¬Å"action levelâ⬠recommended by health authorities. A simple ionization chamber is nothing more than a metal can with a wire inside. When a radioactive particle passes through the air in the chamber, many of the molecules of air are ionized, having electrons knocked loose from the outer atomic shells. Applying a positive voltage on the outer can relative to the internal wire, causes these ions to be attracted to the wire and the free electrons to be attracted to the interior wall of the can. This movement of charge is a tiny current that may be amplified to detect the rate at which ions are being generated, and thereby the rate that radioactive particles are passing through the can. The chamber will be detecting mostly betaà particles. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Copper is an essential element for all known living organisms, including humans. You need a small amount of copper in your diet to stay healthy. On average, most people will eat and drink about 1,000 micrograms ( à ¼g) of copper per dayââ¬âdrinking water normally contributes approximately 150 à ¼g per day. Levels of copper found naturally in ground water and surface water are typically very lowââ¬âabout 4 à ¼g of copper in one liter (L) of water or lessââ¬âhowever, drinking water may contain higher levels of copper, usually as a result of flowing through copper pipes. High levels of copper can occur if water that is corrosive comes in contact with copper plumbing and copper-containing fixtures. Many factors can make water corrosive for copper pipes: dissolved salts and minerals, bacteria, and suspended solids, such as sand, sediment, and rust. The level of copper in drinking water increases with the corrosivity of the water and the length of time it remains in contact with the plumbing. If the copper level gets too high, the water may have a metallic taste and you might notice blue or blue-green stains around sinks and plumbing fixtures. It will be highest in the morning because the water will have been exposed to the pipes overnight. If you are being served by a public water system, the owner of the utility will have results ofà copper sampling, which is a process that has been done in parts of the water-distribution system. In this chemistry science fair project, you will investigate another possible factor in making water corrosive for copper ââ¬â the pH of the water. You will test the theory that acidic water is more corrosive for copper pipes than non-acidic water. In the procedure, dingy copper pennies will be placed in either plain water or in water with acetic acid (vinegar). You may know that newly minted pennies have bright, shinny copper but over time the copper and air react and the pennies build up a layer of copper oxide on them. The copper oxide is the dull, dark coloration on well-used pennies. In this experiment, if the water is corrosive enough to strip off the copper oxide then you will see the progress of the reaction by watching the pennies go from dull and dingy to bright and shiny. The pennies get shiny because the copper oxide is being stripped off by a reaction, which results in increasing levels of copper in the liquid. Unfortunately, water that is corrosive slowly eats away at the pure copper, as well as at the copper oxide. For houses with corrosive water systems, this can result in elevated levels of copper in the drinking water. On a purely practical level, houses with corrosive water systems might find that their copper pipes are springing leaks, and that the whole house needs to be re-piped with plastic pipes! To measure the amount of copper present in the solutions that are used to clean the pennies, you will perform a color-based chemical test. The chemicals for the test are contained in a small tablet, which is dissolved in water. When the tablet is dissolved, the solution turns reddish-orange. If no copper (or very small amounts of copper) is present, the solution remains reddish-orange. If copper is present, the solution will turn blue.

Teddy Roosevelt essays
Teddy Roosevelt essays Theodore Roosevelt, the second of four children, was born in New York, New York on October 27, 1858. He was part Dutch, English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French, and German. Because of Roosevelts poor health, he suffered from asthma and defective vision. He had great energy, curiosity, and determination like his father. Teedie as his family would call him, loved books and the outdoors. He combined these interests into nature study. When he was ten and again when he was fourteen, Teedie went with his family on yearlong trips to Europe and the Middle East. His father built a gymnasium in his house so he could exercise regularly. His father said that he would need a strong body to give his mind a chance to develop fully. Over time, Roosevelt overcame his asthma and built up unusual physical strength. On October 27, 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway. They were a happily married couple for about 3 years until she died on February 13, 1884, following a baby girl the next day named, Alice Roosevelts mother died on the same day as Theodores wife. Baby Alice survived, and was subsequently married in a lavish White House ceremony to Nicholas Longworth. Meanwhile, Roosevelt married his childhood sweetheart, Edith Kermit Carow, in London. She was an intelligent, sensitive and cultivated woman. Resignedly, she accepted many of her husbands most disruptive decisions, such as his break with the Republican Party in 1912. She gave four sons-Theodore, Jr.; Archibals; Quentin; and a daughrt Ethel. The energetic kids in the Roosevelt family were the liveliest group of children to live in the White House. September 14, 1901 Roosevelt took the oath of office at Buffalo and became the twenty-sixth President of the United States. At age 42, he was the youngest man to hold that office. In May of 1902, Crater Lake National Park was established. Other National Parks established by Roosevelt are Windy Cave National Pa...
